Single mum by choice: Jana

Jana is 36, single and an educator by profession. She has wanted to have a child for at least ten years, she reports. At first, she wanted a child with the right woman at her side, but now she separates her desire to have children from her partnership. “I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t make this dependent on someone else!”

At first, she asked a friend, but then he backed out. “A sperm bank was out of the question for me because it’s too impersonal after all,” she says. So she looked online for help.

Search for a Yes donor

“I was amazed at how many paths there are. And especially how many people there are who have the same great desire as I do. I was looking for a donor who knew what he was doing. I basically didn’t care about appearance, just that he should be healthy.” Two men were shortlisted, she says: “I was very nervous at the first meeting. It’s not every day that you meet the potential father of your child,” she says. It was more relaxed at the second meeting: “The meeting with the second man was also relatively spontaneous, without me being able to give it much thought. We ate something and told each other about our wishes and ideas. It really fit.”

First tests started

In the meantime, three attempts are behind them and in the new year they want to continue: “My wish for the new year is clearly to fulfill my wish to have children!
