A family and friendship network is also very important

My name is Adriana, I am 34 years old and the mother of a one-year-old son. I am a lesbian and a single parent by choice, I had my son through a private sperm donation. The decision to become a single mother was not difficult for me, as I had planned to do so very early on in case I didn’t find a partner. I didn’t want to wait forever and decided to go down this path and I am very happy about it.

Adriana ist Solo-Mutter und sehr froh darüber

What I really like about being a single parent is the fact that I don’t have to consult with my partner on important decisions, whether it’s about parenting or other issues such as choosing a daycare place. Of course I’m not entitled to maintenance, but I’ve sorted out my financial situation beforehand and also assessed contingencies so that I can manage very well with savings and parental allowance. I also get a lot of support from my parents – both financially and personally. I am a social pedagogue by profession and live in Würzburg. As I am adopted myself and my parents did not follow the normal course of events, I would like to show with my contribution that even non-“normal” family constellations can lead to a happy family. I would advise young parents who are going down similar paths that they should have their finances in order and also consider possible situations and surprises. It is also very important to have a family and friendship network that can provide a lot of support. As I write this, I have my little son in my arms and I am grateful and happy for this opportunity.
